RPC is a modern, progressive and commercially-oriented City law firm. With over 600 people, we provide a full business law service to a wide range of clients across the globe. The ability to attract, develop and retain high calibre people lies at the heart of RPC’s culture and its future business success. We want our workplace to be one where everyone feels welcome, respected, valued and included, so that they can succeed professionally and contribute fully to life at RPC. It makes business sense; it encourages innovation and creativity; and it strengthens relationships with our clients.
Identifying and building the talent pipeline at all levels
RPC’s aspiration is that the composition of the firm reflects that of society. While we acknowledge that we still have some way to go, we believe that the range of measures we’ve put in place, including proactive talent programmes will help us achieve our goal.
A common thread running through these programmes is opening up access to our sector by providing new entry routes and career paths. For example:
We’ve been quick to take advantage of recent changes in qualification criteria for careers in law by recently hiring our first apprentices. The apprentices have been assigned buddies and mentors to help them navigate their new experience and are being supported in attaining further academic qualifications with a local college.
Mentoring is an important tool which supports the progression of our people. Targeted at RPC high potentials, our ongoing participation in the 30% Club mentoring scheme has received 100% positive feedback from both mentees and mentors. The scheme offers opportunities for business leaders across all sectors and industries to come together to share best practice, lessons learnt and hopefully impart some personal tips on succeeding.
At RPC, we offer a range of development programmes targeted at key career decision points and transitions; these programmes aim to deliver powerful personal impact through 360 degree feedback and one-to-one coaching sessions. External coaches help optimise the experience by providing practical skills, goals, and advice to participants.
Innovation in Recruitment
To help us identify stand-out candidates no matter who they are or where they come from, we have invested in new software Rare’s Contextual Recruitment System (CRS). The new software hardwires social mobility metrics into our applicant tracking system. It will support our recruiters in quantitatively and consistently measuring the potential of all applicants, ensuring we hire the best people from the widest range of backgrounds.
Partnerships with organisations
For seven years, we have supported Limitless London, a careers guidance initiative for young people of GCSE age. Aimed at increasing students’ chances of entering Higher Education and/or employment, Limitless also presents a great learning experience for our people. Each student is paired with a mentor from RPC, who provides invaluable guidance on the transition from studying at school to being employed in a career in the City.
East London Business Alliance (ELBA)
With the aim of bringing about positive change in East London, we partner with ELBA on activities such as the Career Capital day for law students from universities with high levels of diversity. The day is comprised of skills building, networking and presentation sessions.
Our approach is making a difference in attracting diverse talent who might not otherwise have considered a career in law. However you don’t have to take our word for it…. here’s what Efia Davis, one of our new Apprentice Legal Administrators has to say:
“Being an apprentice at RPC is a unique opportunity; learning from those who have experience within the legal sector and understanding the wider business context has been invaluable.”
A fresh perspective for a smarter legal experience; that’s what our people and our clients can expect from RPC.
