RBS is a Founding Partner for #GivingTuesday, which was introduced to the UK by the Charities Aid Foundation last December.
#GivingTuesday — which falls on December 1st this year — is a growing global phenomenon and a great opportunity for companies to reach out to customers, staff and charitable partners and to celebrate and strengthen their charitable activities.
This movement started in the US in 2012 and has since spread across the world. #GivingTuesday follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The simple message is that after the two days of sales and deals, #GivingTuesday is a day to give back. This can be giving time, money or simply putting a spotlight on great causes.
RBS were among 800 other UK organisations to sign up last year. These partners included big businesses like BT, Microsoft and PWC. Many well known charities such as Cancer Research UK Marie Curie and NSPCC joined in and there were also hundreds of small and local organisations on board.
#GivingTuesday trended for 11 hours across the UK on Twitter and gained considerable national and local media attention. Donations increased on the day itself across a range of platforms, such as Just Giving. Visa witnessed a 10% increase in donations through their cards compared to the same day in 2013 — this equates to £2500 donated every minute on #GivingTuesday. #GivingTuesday also gained the support of high profile individuals, including the Prime Minister and other party leaders, Bill and Melinda Gates, Tom Daley and David Tennant.
This video shows why we chose to become Founding Partners and why we would encourage other businesses to get onboard this year.
