E.ON: Can innovation help save energy customers money?

Technology and innovation have an important role to play in improving the services we offer and the experience our customers have. We’re also always looking for ways to help make things simpler and fairer for our customers because it helps us earn and maintain their trust.

To help our customers use no more energy than they need, we started installing smart meters in our customers’ properties three years ago and we’ve installed almost half a million so far. Smart meters bring many benefits, like giving customers greater control of their energy use, with the help of an In Home Display which shows them how much energy they’re using and how much they’re spending.

We continually listen to our customers, helping us to deliver the products and services they want. So when customers who currently have a prepayment meter told us they wanted the benefits of smart meters while also being able to choose from all the different E.ON tariffs, we listened.

In May this year we launched the pilot of a revolutionary payment option – ‘Smart Pay As You Go’.

We were the first of the larger energy suppliers to offer prepayment meter customers access to all of its tariffs and its cheapest prices. Previously these were only offered to customers who choose to pay by Direct Debit, so we’ve levelled the playing field for prepayment customers, potentially saving them up to £102 (1) per year.

With Smart Pay As You Go, customers can see their up-to-date meter balance at any time, get alerts so they know when they need to top-up, and see forecasts on how long their energy credit will last to help prevent the inconvenience of running out of energy. Customers can also top-up their account anywhere and at any time, by app, online or by phone.

The benefits of our Smart Pay As You Go payment option have been recognised by the government: Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, the Rt Hon Amber Rudd MP, said at the time of launching the pilot that the scheme will help customers “have greater control over their energy use and [to] keep their bills low.”

We’ll continue to make sure customers are fully aware of the benefits of smart meters and to invest in our Smart Metering Centre of Excellence where we have a team of advisors dedicated to helping customers throughout their smart meter journey.

And while Smart Pay As You Go remains in its pilot stage, we’re aiming to offer it more broadly throughout 2016 to new and existing customers.

 

(1) £102 is the amount a typical dual fuel prepayment meter customer, with Ofgem average consumption, could save per year if switching from E.ON’s EnergyPlan standard tariff to its cheapest one year fixed price tariff (E.ON Energy Fixed 1 Year V16). This amount includes payment method discounts of £70 per year (£35 per fuel through a reduction in standing charge), which is the equivalent amount received by customers who pay by fixed monthly Direct Debit. Prices valid as of 1st September 2015;
