Are businesses doing enough in the communities in which they are based?

Through our Factory Tour programme we recently realised the huge potential of our work with schools to make a powerful contribution to the local community. At Thorntons we see education as vitally important to ensuring that we continue to supply our customers with a quality product for years to come. This led to our support of a whole school project at Leys Junior School; just 10 minutes away from Thornton Park. Pupils were challenged to design, produce, market and sell a product containing chocolate (Apprentice Style!)

“At Thorntons we see education as vitally important to ensuring that we continue to supply our customers with a quality product for years to come.“

Over the course of this 15 week project Thorntons staff visited the school numerous times in order to promote the children’s learning. We discussed planning their product and talked about careers (all the jobs involved in making a box of chocolates). We had great fun teaching every child how to hand pipe in our closely fought piping competition, and each class visited Thornton Park to see how it’s done in the “real world”.

The culmination of the project was a chocolate fair when each class sold their chocolate product and presented their project to the Factory Tours team from Thorntons. The atmosphere was electric – the children were rightly proud of their work and we were blown away by the standard of what they produced and the extent of the learning over the course of the project. One class even had packaging with Braille in order to include the needs of one child who was visually impaired. The winning class then came to Thornton Park to present their work to our CEO in the Boardroom.

“Helping to raise standards and being a part of improving pupils’ personal and social development is exciting and important to Thorntons…“

Nic Way, Headteacher of Leys School said

“Thorntons have helped the children so much to experience “real life businesses” and to understand how varied the world of work is…We are so grateful to [them] for their generosity of time — and their chocolates — to help our topic come to life and give it a sense of purpose and realism. I hope more local businesses get involved in supporting schools as the staff and the children have so much to learn from them.”

We have been proud to be involved in such an inspiring project. Helping to raise standards and being a part of improving pupils’ personal and social development is exciting and important to Thorntons, as we further develop our partnership with local schools. Watch out for more from the Thorntons Factory Tours team in the future!
