York St John plays an integral role in supporting the development and delivery of the region’s economic strategy. The University is heavily involved in a number of initiatives and activities working with SMEs, large organisations, LEPs, local authorities and the wider community and the outputs of this can be evidenced both through economic and social impact.
York St John University has a commitment to building strong business partnerships. Our collaborations with businesses include helping to improve their performance, engaging with employers on graduate employability and initiatives to enhance innovation and learning opportunities for our students.
In 2014 York St John’s Psychology and Design students were able to play a small role in the development of York’s new landmark building, The Hiscox Building. Led by leading national architect, Ken Shuttleworth, undergraduate and postgraduate students were given open access to Hiscox’s building project team, external contractors and office environment with the aim of developing a concept that improves the Hiscox working environment.
Students took part in 6 workshops and 3 presentations in both London and York, and the winning design was manufactured by world leading design company Vitra. The winning designer also secured a contract to work on further Hiscox design projects. This industry-led project formed the final assessed piece of work for the Design students and marked the beginning of what we believe will be an exciting and lasting relationship with Hiscox.
The University has since been involved in the development of the Hiscox Business Club which offers space within the firm’s impressive new building to aspiring entrepreneurs. As well as a supportive environment, members of the club will have access to a range of exclusive events in the city, including York St John’s Business Masterclasses.
Among a number of future collaborations, Hiscox will continue to support our design competition with level 2 students, incorporating this into their annual sponsorship of the York Design Awards. Meanwhile, we are delighted to be embarking on a major business partnership with Hiscox which involves working together to create a dynamic learning environment for the company’s future workforce, and will have a lasting impact for both Hiscox and the University.
“York St John is proving to be a great partner, helping us to define the future of our business and in our joint long-term goal of establishing York as a city for entrepreneurs”, said Alan Millard, Chief Operating Officer at Hiscox. “They are truly a business and community focused university, actively working with us in the research and design of innovative technology-led insurance products and expanding the Business Club facilities and services more widely across York.”
